Since the peaceful handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the central government in Beijing has honored more or less a 50-year transition period, where Hong Kong can organize its own affairs. On July 1 an annual demonstration should indicated how happy the people in Hong Kong are with that arrangement up to now. And whether they want to take to the streets.
Government, media freedom and freedom of organization and speech are key freedoms Hong Kong has, compared to the citizens in mainland China. Defense, international relations are dealt with from Beijing (and that explains the position of NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden was mainly a China-affair - although some might disagree).
The China Weekly Hangout will discuss on Thursday July 4 July11 the Hong Kong/Beijing relationship. HKU lecturer +Paul Fox from Utah, where he attends a conference. But you are also welcome to join; please raise your voice here, or register directly at our event page.
You can also leave your remarks or questions here, or at our event page.

The hangout will take place on Thursday July 4 11, 10pm Beijing (and Hong Kong) time, 4pm CEST (Europe) and 10pm EST (US/Canada).
The hangout had to be delayed for one week, since all our HK contacts got caught in internet-free zones, like Hong Kong buses, American hotels and other outdated meeting points. Hope to see you on July 11.

On March 14, the +China Weekly Hangout discussed the state of the Hong Kong media in 2013, with HKU lecturer +Paul Fox Paul Fox, Beijing-based journalist +Lara Farrar and moderation by +Fons Tuinstra, of the China Speakers Bureau.

The upcoming cyber war is the subject of the +China Weekly Hangout on Thursday 27 June. The revelations by Edward Snowden showed that the US is preparing a military shake-out, as both China, Russia and other countries are building up their cyber war capacities too. Joining us are former security consultant +Mathew Hoover and media en communication lecturer +Paul Fox of the Hong Kong University. Moderation by +Fons Tuinstra, president of the China Speakers Bureau.
