telecom - 3G ready for duplicate-and-destroy
The third generation mobile communication is ready to take off in China, says US chipmaker Doug Grant in The Standard.
"Not only has TD-SCDMA matured and being put into commercial operation, Datang Mobile, one of the major manufacturers engaging in TD- SCDMA system equipment development, also made sure all the equipment needed has been completed, so now it's just the matter of licensing," Grant told The Standard.
Well, that might be true, but the question is what will happen then. The Silicon Hutong builds on my earlier argument that in the end mainly the big internet companies might be able to get enough tracking among the internet users.
China Mobile and Unicom each have the resources to create a substitute for any of the services offered via their networks. AND they each have something the cigar munchers don't - the ability to cut off those services in favor of their own. They've already started doing it, and they make no apologies. The one thing that tells them which service is next on their duplicate-and-destroy list is the statistics they see first - usage numbers.Maybe 3G is around the corner in China, it is not going to be paradise for the service and content providers.
