I was shocked -- I mean, shocked -- that people say this is her private matter. Whom she dates, why she dates, even how she dates, should be a national or even international affair. Since she is the most visible Chinese film star in the global arena, whatever she does represents all of us, right?

That didn't read as sarcasm in the least bit, in personal opinion...which makes the entire article a bit pathetic and sad. God forbid the girl goes out with someone she actually feels like dating instead of a nice, Chinese boy that everyone expects of her. It's sad that this is still an issue to this day. There may be some cultural points of view that *might* make the post *seem* to make sense... but the commenters are correct: this isn't a state or even culturally defined event and even by Chinese standards that idea is biggoted. At best this is a celebrity event and more so for the hoopla. Plus, there are as many cultural reasons why her dating a foreigner could be seen as good rather than bad.

China only has two internationally famous actresses (out of a billion people) whereas western culture (or even just England or the U.S.) has tons along with collectively speaking the dominant film/TV industry in the world by far. So it's actually closed minded to not concede that Chinese would naturally feel SOME misgivings about their only famous young actress dating a non Chinese.
I don't see Keira Knightley dating foreigners (let alone a non-white Brit) and actually you never saw Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Yao Ming dating foreigners either. There are many races but only one species. I am multi-racial, though I appear white. If you look closely at my eyes you can see my 1/32nd Chinese heritage, my surname is Scottish, and i know of Cajun-French, and English, not to mention native American.
