internet - Down with the engineers, power to the users

Ah, our discussion today at Chinabiz reminded me about the end of the 1990s when the internet was just emerging in China. We had lengthy meetings, formed groups and especially the engineers who were going to build our website needed about six months to get things done.
So, today, almost a decade later, we were discussing how they could facilitate our new companies, our Speakers' Bureau and our travel service for visiting delegations for China. They said they had a solution for using actually a legal copy of Microsoft Sharepoint at our ISP, needed to install stuff, needed to train people to do it, and then they could start building the websites. Two, three months, they estimated, of not too many other jobs would come on their way.
For the Speakers' Bureau I could see it would be worth the investment, but our service for delegations: that needed a few webpages, an email address and that was it.
This evening, I have spent half an hour on setting up a mailing list, that comes with a website too. There is still some information on its way (like a great trip we are organizing net month for an EMBA-class of the business school Insead), but that will be up tomorrow.
Down with the engineers, power to the users!
