Missed the free coffee at Starbucks
Well, I suggested it earlier in the week myself (although I mentioned the wrong day then), but when I passed my Starbucks in Huaihai Zhonglu this morning(picture), I knew there would also be on Friday no free coffee for me. Quite a bit of a crowd in front of the little store, waiting for new coffee being brewed. I might be Dutch, but are not going to wait for an hour for a free coffee. Quite some people seemed happy to do so.

Ha, I was in China only a couple of weeks ago, and I stayed at the Home Inn in the local area - every morning would involve a pilgrimage to the same Starbucks as depicted in that picture of yours...I don't remember it every being so packed though. I suppose there is some truth to what they say about Shanghai people being cheap...:P
On a more serious note - I've been keeping my eye on your blog for a while now, it's always handy to have some sort of views on a ground level from an 'outsider' - ie, someone who's less likely to be influenced by the orthodox way of thinking cultivated by the society at large.
I'm a student of modern Chinese society - and most interested in the development of the middle class and what that bodes for the development of China, from a governance viewpoint. As someone whose line of work would (hopefully) involve dealing with members of this class - I wonder if you have any thoughts on this.
I don't have a blog so if you do bother replying to this, please use my email derrick.sm.kwan[at]gmail[dot]com
Cheers.
There is no middle class in China.
