A battle won for the environment in Yunnan

the three parallel rivers

Josie Liu points at a pledge the Yunnan provincial government has made to protect the environment. There will be no dams and no mines in the region of the three parallal rivers, one of the World Natural Heritages sites, listed by UNESCO.

That would be good, but it's also a surprising switch. Only three months ago, families upstream of the proposed Tiger Leaping Gorge dam were told they would have to move sometime during 2008.

Question of course is where the boundaries are of the heritage site. As the article states: "a hydro-electronic power plant was planned for a site close to the heritage area", but what is close?

If the provincial government decides that the end of the Tiger Leaping Gorge is not in the heritage area anymore and build a dam, it will still affect a huge area within the heritage area!

I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
