The New York Times published today a second excellent articles about China's ecological degradation, this time on the water shortage. Of course that should come first, but I was slightly distracted also by the excellent way how they are using new media tools.
Only last week the paper decided to drop its financial firewalls that kept their columns and archives away from the non-paying readers. That was of course an effective way to kill the conversation on their often excellent articles. Dropping those firewalls was applauded as a sign the some of the dinosaurs might actually be able to survive.
But when you see how their articles on the water shortage in China is embedded in new media applications, it is really a beauty. Apart from the common once (email to a friend), they have a section where you can get a Chinese summary, a video, a podcast, weblogs, an interactive graphic and access to a round table of experts. I did not see yet a group at Facebook, but they should get away with such an omission.
