Today at Chinabiz we had a lot of fun when we received a business proposal from a local agent of Business Wire. They could provide us with 200 business stories each month, ten per day, for free. Why we thought that was funny? Have a look at the service: they distribute press releases.
Of course we are willing to help them distribute their corporate propaganda, against a fee for us.
Press releases as a way to distribute information are anyway on the way out, as they were typically a way to communicate between companies and mass media. Now companies are discovering tools to get directly to the consumers and other customers, sending out leaflets has a very limited effect, if any.
