I just witnessed an interesting incident. A sales person of one of the bigger hotels visited our office to talk to some of my colleagues. You read this well: they leave their comfortable hotel and visit potential clients.
That is a clear indication that the trend that you could open just another 5-star hotel, open their doors and get customers in paying whatever you were asking without making a big effort might be over, at least for now. Competition that is called. Shanghai has now over 500 hotels and especially the older hotels have a harder time in getting people in.

As far as I remember (already 11 years in China!) sales people in 4 and 5 star-hotels have always been visiting assistant and secretaries to offer them gifts and night stay in order they choose their hotels next time a foreign businessman comes to town. Nothing really new!
