Thomas Crampton has been talking to quite a few of our speakers at the China Speakers Bureau. Here you can see Paul French, taking on one of our other prominent speakers, Tom Doctoroff. Paul French has been publishing a book on the journalist/entrepreneur Carl Crow, a Tough Old China Hand: The Life, Times, and Adventures of an American in Shanghai
French argues that Doctoroff is wrong in portraying himself as a pioneer in China and that all has been done before the Second World War, indeed by Carl Crow. Folowwing that argument, all honor should probably go to Marco Polo for opeing up China, although he did not yet arrive in a Buick.
Both Paul French and Tom Doctoroff are available as speakers through the China Speakers Bureau. Of course it would be a great idea to have them both together on the stage. Do drop me a line if you are interested.

Of course Crow did everything before. Advertising is as old as prostitution. Hence the women on the car. Fons, it's non-news item and it will be a non-debate too. Both are right. Crow launched Buick and Tom relaunched it. And Crow only had unidirectional mass media (did he use TV?) whereas Tom can use the web and mobile right now. Tom arrived (during)(after) communist rule and Crow definitely before.
But basically tom and carl are in the same business.Invented 5000 yrs ago in Mesopotamia: http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/human-evolution/mg19826533.700-were-mesopotamians-the-first-brand-addicts.html
Jan,
That is a very funny story on Mesopotamian branding!
Does this mean the Chinese did not invent branding first?
Tom
The Chinese invented a lot but they did not invent branding, nor communism or capitalism. They invented silk. But it's better to say they "discovered" it.
