by Archangeli via FlickrI have no direct access to the Pearl TV station in Hong Kong, but my sources in Guangdong tell me they just broadcasted interviews with fuming French business people. They have been doing business with China for years and are now forced to return to France to obtain one-day visas.
Figures on May are expected soon, but already in April, when the new visa routines came into full force, the number of visitors from Hong Kong and Macao dropped 30 percent. There is no reason to expect any change in the visa routine till after the Olympics.
Update: And there might not be any change after the Olympics either, is the crunch of this rather comprehensive article in Forbes I missed earlier but came to me through twitter.
Can't crack the visa problem? Try Vietnam or Indonesia, where regulations are looser. "If anything, the tighter restrictions are costing the Chinese government money," says Harris. Still, he adds, it's worth it to them to "continue the trend of becoming a more lawful society."
I missed one opportunity: while representative offices are on the way out now the market is becoming more free, it could still be a good opportunity to get a Z-visa through the Fesco-likes.
