Plenty of hotels rooms during Beijing Olympics

Industry reports suggests that hotels in Beijing still have a massive number of rooms available during the Beijing Olympics and comming summer. From the Mercury News:

Zhang Huiguang, director of Beijing's Tourism Bureau, says the crunch that was predicted doesn't seem to be happening. She said that about 500,000 foreigners were expected for the games, a figure Beijing officials have long been predicting.

Although 77 percent of capacity at Beijing's five-star hotels has been booked during the Aug. 8-24 Olympic Games, she said, the four-star hotel rate is only 44 percent. And it's even lower for three- and two-stars.

Observers said one reason could be China's crackdown on visa procedures, targeting students and others on short-term stays who might be activists intent on protesting during the Olympics.

The article also points at "observers" who have made a link with China's restrictive visa policies. Since they most likely mean me, it is only fair to give to a warning about a possible bias slipping in here.

There was no informatin on the pricing strategy of the hotels. Airline companies have been trying to lure more passengers by lowering their prices. Chinese airline companies have started to cut the number of flights, but that is an option that is not open for hotels.

Keep in mind, too, that most of the 5-star bookings for the Olympics period belong to support organizations like the IOC, sponsors, and national leaders (like President Bush) who require multiple rooms (or multiple floors in the case of Bush). Also, they tend to book for the entire games. So, in reality, the number of actual tourist booking in the five star hotels is actually a smaller percentage of that 77%.

I have a hotel room in Beijing during the Olympics that I cannot fill due to a visa complication to travel (like so many I wonder who will make it). If you want a room at one of the best Beijing boutique hotels quaint, traditional and for not a ludicrous amount of money, let me know, seriously. It will be a great way to experience China for the first time during this historic period than a standard international room. Thank you for helping me out.

I wonder how many rooms have been booked by package deal companies and have not been purchased by consumers.

Looking at how expensive some of the rooms are it would be no surprise if quite a few end up empty or they go for a bargain just before the games begin on August 8.
