There's a story in the photos of Olympic Volunteers displaying the 3 finger "Peace Plus One" Sustainability Symbol... It's about the GREEN OLYMPICS and optimism for the future.
In spite of all the negative commentary about police "crack-down" on Chinese and foreigners in Beijing, my personal experience is quite the contrary... every encounter I have had with authorities here in Beijing has been cordial and respectful of our intentions and efforts to communicate a positive message of balance and awareness of our personal opportunities to promote harmony in SOciety the Environment and Economy.
As a foreigner volunteering my time, I find our Chinese hosts very welcoming and apologetic for any inconveniences that foreigners might experience, especially on the language / communication issue.
The 3 finger Sustainability Symbol has already been introduced in the English media of China...

... but the real heroes are the Chinese people themselves (who are willing to change themselves to accommodate the new climate reality) - and hopefully, some Chinese media will recognize this and show the same photos you referenced - illustrating that many Chinese ARE part of the Solution!
