internet - What if Google is a media company in China?
In the US there is currently a big debate emerging on the question whether Google is a media company or not. A federal judge ruled that Google (but Yahoo, Time Warner and Microsoft are also involved) could refuse advertising and therefore has the legal rights of a media company.
While Google has always pretended to be an algorithm-driven technology company, that image has undergone already severe cracks. Humans decide what media are selected for Google News and instruct the algorithms accordingly. Now, obviously Google want to have the editorial right to refuse ads. A company that makes editorial decisions is a media company.
Now, when companies come to China I tell them the last thing they should do is call themselves a media company. Being a media company in China is asking for trouble, ask Rupert. So, often those companies do anyway harmless other things too and do not have to register as a media company.
Now, what if the Chinese regulator reads US papers and discovers this important technology firm is actually a media company. Maybe it is already a passed station for Google, since they accepted already a certain level of governmental control over their editorial control by setting up a censored search engine for China. Still, I smell trouble here.
