When I read in Managing the Dragon that Beijing was going to limit or even ban corporate events before and during the Beijing Olympics in 2008, I first thought somebody had been using illegal herbs. But the link to a local business website makes clear that this is no practical joke.
The rules are from the State Council, one of the governmental institutions we have to take serious. Although the rules were issued already two years ago, and might have been forgotten by now, the reports says that hotels have actually started to refuse events.
In the first phase from 30 April to 31 July events in Beijing will be severely restricted if they do not related directly to the Olympics. Exceptions are possible for events that have been held already twice before. From August 1 till 29 September no events will be allowed, unless they are directly related to the Olympics.
Since events organizers face already restrictions now, it might limit the business of many companies (including our speakers bureau).
Update: Beijing Newspeak seems to have found a Xinhua press release related to this set of regulations, but it is so opaque that even Beijing Newspeak has no clue what it might mean.
