At the closing of the year unfortunately also one of my favorite weblogs, Beijing Newspeak, announced is imminent closure (added: in its current format). For two years Beijing Newspeak, written by Chris O'Brien, gave a peak behind the scenes of China's official news agency Xinhua and the tribulations of a language cleaner who has to clean up texts that often cannot be translated.
The candid comments made me wonder how often he has been closed to dismissal, but he made it a full two years. Since there is in this positions hardly a way forward for foreigners, it is not the kind of job where you can hang on for longer than two years without mental damage, so, even though it is sad to lose this unique outpost, I can understand his decisions.

"I suppose Beijing Newspeak will now lose its competitive advantage but I see no reason not to carry it on."
I don't think he's shutting down the blog.
