The Shanghai Foreign Correspondents Club says in a message today that some of its members have been hindered while trying to report on the so-called maglev-demonstrations in the city. They were detained when they could no produce their passports, a requirement by Chinese law.
Very few foreigners would carry their passports, since you would only need them when leaving the country or checking into a hotel, so the measure was seen as a way to stop them from working.
The FCC in Beijing report similar police actions and is reporting back on the IOC, since foreign reporters were promised a better working climate in the year before the Olympic Games in Beijing.
