In search of China's middle class
Christine Lu has started at her weblog a nice discussion about China's middle class, or at least the concept that is confusing many China-watchers. It triggered off quite a nice stream of useful comments, often conflicting. We might not be able to reach a conclusion in that way, but it shows the advantages of the online conversations.
Keep watching it. At Chinabiz Speakers we have the plan to organize a (perhaps some) debates on the middle class in China, as it would be a nice way to put some of our key speakers in the limelight.
"Can't we just forget about the middle class," sighted one of our speakers last year when the issue emerged yet again. When the concept of the middle class is - in my view - is merely an ideology that originated from the US and cannot be transfered to China.

In our blog Civic China, we try to clear up at least one of the logical fallacies the discussion on China's "new middle class" (as based on David Goodman's research) is falling for. If interested, please see http://www.civicchina.com/?p=37
