BOCOG gives house arrest to athletes

European athletes, arriving in Beijing, discovered they were forced by the Beijing Olympic Committee (BOCOG) to stay in the Olympic village and saw their arrangements elsewhere in the city canceled, writes the German daily TAZ (in German). Reason: security.
Athletes from both Germany and Switzerland faced cancellations by their original hotels and they expect that controlling the athletes was more important than the official security reason. They also complained there was nobody of BOCOG to talk to.
My assessment is slightly different. While control and security might be an argument, in China it is always most important to see who is making money where. I guess that BOCOG can make more money on people staying in their village and have forced the hospitality industry to kick their foreign guest out. That much leverage the BOCOG has.
