Metaverse: expected to grow fast in China – Rupert Hoogewerf

Rupert Hoogewerf

The metaverse is poised to grow fast in the coming three years, says Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report, who published a report about the industry, according to the state-owned China Daily. Technology giant Huawei tops the list with the greatest potential in the metaverse for the first time, followed by Alibaba, Baidu, China Telecom and China Mobile.

The China Daily:

China’s metaverse-related industry is expected to grow fast in the next three years, thanks to continuing maturity and the application of key technologies including 5G, artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing and virtual reality, according to an industrial report.

“Whether it’s entertainment, social media, online education, telecommuting, or digital marketing, the metaverse can offer entirely new experiences and models in the years ahead,” said Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report.

Hoogewerf made the remarks after the Hurun Research Institute released a ranking report of 200 Chinese companies with the greatest potential in the metaverse in 2024 in Nansha district of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, in late August.

“The metaverse is considered a strategic emerging industry and will accelerate the promotion of Nansha to become an innovation highland and emerging industry incubation highland in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area,” said Hoogewerf.

The report refers to companies based in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. For the main list, companies considered have a value of $1 billion or more.

“There has been a clear trend of metaverse-related businesses in the past three years, especially in the fields of education, finance, tourism and healthcare,” said Hoogewerf.

Technology giant Huawei tops the list with the greatest potential in the metaverse for the first time, followed by Alibaba, Baidu, China Telecom and China Mobile.

Taobao, Alibaba´s ecommerce platform, has become the country´s most valuable brand, beating China Mobile and Baidu, says Hurun´s lastest report. Hurun´s chairman Rupert Hoogewerf tells the South China Morning Post, he expects the value of the brand to rise even more.

The South China Morning Post:
Taobao, the online shopping platform owned by Alibaba, has become the country’s most valuable brand for the first time, according to the “Hurun Most Valuable Chinese Brands 2016” report.
Valued now at 230 billion yuan, Taobao is followed in second place by telecom operator China Mobile, worth 227 billion yuan, with China’s biggest search engine Baidu in third, with a value of 218 billion yuan, the annual ranking by the Shanghai-based Hurun Research Institute shows.
Now in its eleventh year, the rankings are based on companies’ market value and what it calls a “brand premium”, as well as feedback from 1,000 Chinese consumers , 65 per cent of whom have more than 8,000 yuan monthly income.
Tencent Holdings dropped from top to fifth, with a 210 billion yuan brand value, as its social-networking application WeChat is being counted separately for the first time, itself coming in at seventh with a 132 billion yuan value...
Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report, said he expects the brand value of technology firms to keep rising, as China’s economic priority continues to emphasis domestic consumption and as many more technological brands become parts of everyday life for more Chinese consumers.

Apple got after five years to negotiating its deal with China Mobile, the world´s largest mobile telecom provider. But according to business analyst Shaun Rein it is very unlikely many of the 759 million China Mobile subscribers will fall for Apple´s 4G phones. The top-end users have already signed up subscriptions with for example Samsung, and 80% of the users use 2G and won´t switch easy to 4G.

Apple is the new Blackberry in China - Shaun Rein

ShaunRein2
Shaun Rein
Apple's Tim Cook might have been visiting telecom giant China Mobile, but business analyst Shaun Rein explains in Bloomberg why a deal is very unlikely. "Apple might become the Blackberry of China."
Apple needs telecom giant China Mobile more than China Mobile needs Apple, according to Shaun Rein. China Mobile is in the driver's seat and that does not fit the current business model of Apple.

Telecommunication changes for 2012 - Tricia Wang

Tricia Wang
Sociologist Tricia Wang maps out for 88-bar.com the competitive playing field between China's largest telecom providers, China Telecom, China Unicom and China Mobile. What can their customers expect for 2012?

Tricia Wang:
From the clouds to the ground, 2012 looks like it’s going to be an exciting year for mobile  industry. China Telecom is going abroad to offer mobile services for the transnational elite who travel between China and North America. China Unicom just launched a new mobile internet platform, the Wo-plus Opening System. Let’s see how long China Mobile 600 million 2G users can wait for 3G before switching to Unicom or Telecom. Now that China is the world’s largest smartphone market, how will the future of hardware and software evolve? We already have a glimpse from HTC of their new Sina Weibo smartphone. And then to top if off, both China Telecom and China Unicom may lower broadband prices!
With all these technical and market changes, one of the big questions for 2012 is will Chinese citizens will be relieved of telecommunications costs? Or will 2012 could be the equivalent to the 1996 Telecommunications Act in the United States where institutions benefited more from telecommunication reforms than individuals? [1] We’ll have to see who benefits from thee anti-monopoly investigation.
With the stable divisions of China Unicom, China Mobile, & China Telecom, we don’t hear of potential industry shake ups like this very often. I imagine that Chinese Telcom scholar, Eric Harwitt, is giddy with news. But luckily we have Marc Laperrouzag, so we won’t have to wait a few years for a book or paper to be published to stay up to date on the details.
Let’s hope for faster and more equitable broadband access in 2012! 新年快乐!
